| Description | Today's Hungary is not entirely what it seems. As economic and political transition unfolds and new institutions are created, we are witnessing a new democracy in name but not yet in the day-to-day practice of its people. Uncertainty, anxiety, old patterns of behaviour and ambitious (and sometimes corrupt) use of the new system have deeply affected, and sometimes perverted, the political project of civil society – the yearning for democratization within society. The non-profit organizations and CSOs that are filling the space left by the retreat of the socialist State are, therefore, not all part of the civil society project, even as their organizational forms take on that shape. This section introduces the discussion on donor roles in this complex landscape by looking back at the renaissance of civil society in East Central Europe and at how donors have deeply affected Hungary's political and social future.
