| Description | This chapter introduces the ethical principles and primary laws that govern the practice of occupational therapy in Australia. Ethics and law provides all health professionals with a guiding framework for their practice. Implementation of the Code of Ethics in practice is dynamic, and may at times raise ethical issues that should always be explored and resolved if possible. All health professionals need to have a strong theoretical understanding of ethics and how they can be used to support their clinical practice. All occupational therapists should be able to articulate an ethical framework based on ethical principles, and then demonstrate practice that meets the expectations of employers and professional and regulatory bodies. A code of ethics can also be used as a framework to facilitate discussions about ethics and to improve management of dilemmas that might be encountered by an occupational therapist.
