| Description | The main goal of future mobile networks is to address exponential growth of some parameters such as connectivity density and capacity, while continuing at the same time energy and cost reduction. An important component of the 5G cellular networks is drone characterized by flexible deployment, strong line-of-sight connection links, additional design degrees of freedom and controlled mobility. This chapter surveys the state of the art of drone application in the 5G cellular network environment by focusing on communications at the physical layer. Drone-assisted transmission, millimeter wave communication, nonorthogonal multiple access, as well as cognitive drone communications, are pointed out. With software-defined networking, challenges such as resiliency, reconfigurability, reusability and energy awareness can be easily addressed. The opportunity of employing this paradigm in drone surveillance applications and drone base station networks cannot be denied due to the increased number of drones. A trend of drone-based mobile edge computing is emphasized together with open issues when combining 5G technologies with drones. Book Name: 5G Multimedia Communication |
