| Abstract | The remarkable journey of mobile communication started in the 1980s when the first generation operated for the first time. As the research and technological advancements continue, we have witnessed the next generations of mobile communication. The commercial launch of the upcoming fifth generation (5G) technology is planned for 2020 and will definitely impact our fully connected digital society. 5G is going to provide us with instantaneous information anda highly developed integrated communication platform and services, and is going to include limitless applications for our day to day life. In the initial section of this chapter, we have identified the essential characteristics of the 5G network, events related to 5G, limitations of earlier generations, and have reviewed the major components, methodologies, and some architectures along with several prominent issues. We have tried to discuss the latest attempts of various researchers, vendors, and companies in their efforts to enable a 5G world. This chapter discusses essential technologies, components, and architecture required for the deployment of the future Fifth Generation (5G) communication system. 5G wireless networks are supposed to be a fusion of network tiers of various sizes, backhaul connections, powers, and different radio access technologies, and will integrate an enormous number of intelligent devices. For the 5G network, several two-tier architectures have been suggested, where the macro-cell base station, that is, Mobile base station (MBS), is positioned at the top tier and small cell base stations, that is, SBSs, are in the lower tier under the control of the MBS. A 5G communication system truly yields better flexibility, improved spectral efficiency, omnipresent connectivity, and reliability. Two–tier architecture, Cloud Based Radio Access Network (C-RAN), and Device-To-Device communication are incorporated in 5G in order to push back the limitations of conventional cellular systems. The chapter examines some open issues and advantages associated with different architectures. |
