| Description | The demographic changes that are contributing to increases in the racial, ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic diversity of the workforce and the citizenry of the United States are well documented (Riccucci 2002; U.S. Census Bureau 2010; U.S. DOL Bureau of Labor Statistics 2004). The corresponding imperative for cultural competence among public administrators as a means to ensure service quality, enhance organizational effectiveness, redress disparities, comply with mandates, and reduce liabilities has been articulated repeatedly throughout this book and in other venues (Bailey 2005; Benavides and Hernandez 2007; Johnson and Rivera 2007; Kellar 2005; Rice 2007; Rubaii-Barrett 2006). That case is therefore not restated in this chapter. Instead, the focus here is on educating for cultural competence and, more specifically, on the role that accreditation standards can and do play in facilitating change and monitoring the progress of schools and programs as they strive to meet this challenge.
