| Description | Diamond as a cutting tool material predates diamond as a gem. From the time they were first found in Southern India, these “hard stones” were used for engraving, thus becoming the first diamond tools. They were later embedded into rods and used as tools to drill holes in stone and rock. They were also embedded into iron plates to become lapping plates. Diamond cutting tools as we know them today began when natural diamonds were attached to pieces of steel. Natural diamond cutting tools are still in use today, but on a greatly reduced scale as a result of the development of synthesized mesh- size diamonds in the mid-1950's that lead to the compacted diamond product in the early - 1970's. The cutting and wear applications of these diamonds, and of the new chemically vapor deposited diamond are discussed in this article. Book Name: Handbook of Industrial Diamonds and Diamond Films |
