| Description | Paraprofessional support for students with special educational needs is a relatively recent phenomenon within an Irish context. In this chapter the perspectives of these paraprofessionals are articulated, and it is evident that they play an essential role in the support infrastructure of schools. These paraprofessionals demonstrate high levels of commitment and concern for the students they support, a point that is reinforced by students, their parents, school leaders and support and class/subject teachers. Paraprofessionals were generally very responsive to the learning and social needs of the students they supported; however, they were also very aware of the gaps in their knowledge and that they needed more focused professional development to provide appropriate levels of support.
