| Description | Fault detection and diagnostics (FD&D) is presented as part of the continuum of technology and services associated with Enterprise Energy Management Systems (EEMS). Since the foundation of this information-based technology (computer-based building control) is now over 40 years old and as the concomitant adoption rate EEMS is far from ubiquitous, this chapter examines factors that may hinder owners and operators from taking advantage the latest developments in the field of facility management. Defining barriers to entry is a complex subject. In the interest of covering as broad a range of factors as possible this chapter uses the 'news style', or Kipling Method to explore a full scope. “Who” analyzes barriers in terms of attitudes of the people who will sell, buy, use and support FD&D: Rogers Diffusion of Innovations and the Gartner Hype Cycle “What” identifies the various analytics that make this technology useful “When” scrutinizes opportunity cost with respect to other building projects and how that affects adoption. “Where” assesses the range of buildings and systems that will be affected. “Why” looks at expectations of value returned contrasting energy cost and savings, rebates and operating efficiency. “How” examines scaling of the technologies and processes that underlies the delivery of FD&D. The chapter concludes that there is overwhelming value to be gained in FD&D. Equally, it concludes that the real and perceived risks in adopting the technology will make it challenging for companies to enter and build market share.
