| Description | Mechanical alloying is a powder-processing method that involves repeated cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. This technique, originally developed to produce oxide dispersion-strengthened superalloys, has now been applied to develop a variety of materials with the constitution and properties that are not possible to achieve by any other technique. This entry reviews some recent developments in the areas of oxide dispersion-strengthened steels, glassy steels, and nanostructured steels. In each of the categories, the special features of processing, the type of materials produced, and their structural and mechanical characterization have been discussed. Potential and existing applications of these materials have also been described. Book Name: Encyclopedia of Iron, Steel, and Their Alloys |
