| Description | This entry is devoted to the stability of the retained austenite in nanostructured bainitic steels. The austenite thermal stability, during the bainitic heat treatment as well as at a possible subsequent tempering stage, will be briefly depicted. However, this entry mainly focuses on the mechanical stability of the retained austenite against martensitic transformation, strain- or stress-assisted, since this phenomenon is key in the control of the mechanical behavior of these microstructures. An introduction on the effects that the application of an external mechanical stress causes in terms of the martensitic transformation will be given, before discussing the possibility of either stress-assisted or strain-assisted modes of martensitic transformation taking place. The austenite fraction evolution with strain will be reviewed, revealing the necessity of a detailed analysis of the parameters controlling the mechanical stability of the retained austenite. These parameters will be classified into: ones intrinsic to the austenite, such as its chemical composition, its feature size, and its dislocation density; and ones depending also on the bainitic ferrite matrix, i.e., the mechanical properties mismatch between bainitic ferrite and austenite, and geometrical/morphological considerations of the composite-type material, both affecting the stress/strain partitioning between the phases. Special emphasis will be put in considering the high heterogeneity of the retained austenite and the particular characteristics of nanostructured bainite as compared to other microstructures suffering the so-called transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect.
