Description	In the past decade, the UK has taken significant strides in consolidating its approach towards Industry 4.0. With small and medium enterprises (SMEs) comprising the vast majority of UK businesses, and as the country ventures into a post-Brexit era and emerges from COVID-19, the need to clearly identify and emphasize Industry 4.0 opportunities for SMEs in the UK is greater than ever. Capitalizing on a mature and well-established research and innovation landscape, SMEs can access a significant number of opportunities to de-risk their investment in industrial digital technologies. This could be part of a larger picture in which levelling up regional imbalances in prosperity and productivity, and ambitious net zero emission targets, are the overarching scene-setting policies in the coming decade. Despite certain barriers around upskilling of the workforce and industry/use/regulator trust hampering adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, a significant number of opportunities are there for SMEs' taking. Technological, economic, social, and environmental drivers have helped create opportunities for SMEs engaged in Industry 4.0 technologies that are human-centric, data-centric, or machine-centric. They span sectors of increasing vitality for the UK such as food & drink, foundation industries, textiles, construction, as well as the international collaborations dimension.
