Description	The economy of India has been growing at a fast pace due to huge internal demand and recent FDIs. Particular focus has been placed by the government of India on the manufacturing sector, which is poised to contribute 25 percent of the GDP by 2022. Considering the large contribution of SMEs in manufacturing and government intervention to strengthen technological capabilities of SMEs, this study evaluates the barriers across upstream, downstream, vertical, and E2E engineering along with drivers and opportunities for Industry 4.0 through qualitative research. First, a detailed questionnaire was shared, and then, executives from three SMEs were interviewed on their experience on the implementation of relevant technologies in their respective firms. Based on the study, it was found that the majority of SMEs find lack of standardization and relevant knowledge of technologies as the key barrier. However, opportunities lie in reducing cost and meeting global quality standards by enhancing productivity, which can help Indian SMEs compete with multinational enterprises given that they get the necessary support from favorable government policies.
