| Description | Six lactating Jersey cows with rumen fistulae, fed mixed pasture indoors for a preliminary period of 10 days, were fed one of three varieties of ryegrass for a further two weeks. Voluntary intakes, apparent digeoltibility coefficients, some characteristics of rumen fermentation, and milk yield and composition were measured for the cows on each of the rations. The ryegrass vanetles differed in apparent digestibility, but (here were no significant differences between the total concentrations of fatty acids or the proportions of the individual fatty acids, in the rumen liquor taken from cows fed the different ryegrasses. Milk and butterfat yields were closely related to the voluntary intake of individual animals. |
