| Description | In CR systems, signal processing is moved as far as possible to the digital part. This makes from the physical interface one of the most challenging parts of the architecture. In this chapter, different CR architectures are described from antenna point of view. Key components of the front-end RF are identified with the associated antenna design challenges. Then, a state of the art of the most recent antenna systems proposed for CR is presented. It will be shown that strong constraints make antennas subject to several physical limitations. Metamaterials have proved to be helpful for overcoming these limitations. Finally, we present one of our recent antenna designs which is inspired from metamaterials and a good candidate for spectrum sensing operations. This chapter describes different cognitive radio (CR) architectures from antenna point of view. Key components of the front-end radio frequency (RF) are identified with the associated antenna design challenges. Interweave CR continuously monitors the spectrum usage in a process which runs in parallel with the communication link. The interweave CR radio architecture is based on two antennas. The first antenna is a wideband omnidirectional one. The second antenna is a narrowband one which feeds a frequency agile front-end that can be tuned to the selected band. The chapter shows that strong constraints make antennas subject to several physical limitations. It also presents an antenna design which is inspired from metamaterials and a good candidate for spectrum sensing operations. Providing such tools to analyze antennas and metamaterials (MTM) from a physical point of view will be the key to meeting CR antenna systems requirements in terms of cohabitation, bandwidth enhancement, and miniaturization.
