| Description | The past 10 years have brought many new technologies to local planning offices (Bodum, 1997). The evolution of computers and specifically the speed of microprocessors have been very important factors during this period. But the hardware is only the means for the message. The way in which planners use computers and how they communicate through these new media are even more important than the speed of the hardware. Many people in the cartographic and GIS community have regarded geographical information technology as a set of tools, or as individual programs or functions for specific purposes. This will change in the near future. The different technologies will fuse together and the object-oriented approach to the development of specific applications will become even more evident (Shiffer, 1995; Batty, 1997b; Raper, 1997).
