| Description | In Chapter 2, we reviewed the work of Francis Fukuyama, who argues that with the end of socialism, only one ideology exists in the world today—free-market capitalism guided by liberal democracy. He reasons that since there are no competing ideologies in the world, we have seen the “end of history.” Over the past twenty years, other scholars have proclaimed “the end of politics,” “the end of work,” “the end of the family,” “the end of liberalism,” “the end of medicine,” and “the end of ideology” (Pescosolido & Rubin, 2000, p. 52). These themes suggest a world in the midst of rapid and profound social change: change so rapid that our children will live in a world different from their parents, change so basic that traditional theories on how the world should work no longer apply, and change so profound that some scholars argue we have made a break with the past and have entered a new era—the postmodern era.
