| Description | In the closing months of World War II, Winston Churchill, looking toward his nation's massive rebuilding task, told his people, “We shape our buildings, and they, in turn, shape us.” We, like the British, undertook a massive building program in the postwar years. We have built 70 percent of all the structures that have ever existed in our nation in the past half century (Kunstler, 1993). But what have we built, how have we built it, and how has it shaped us? For many critics, the answers are not good. James Kunstler (1993, 1996), for example, in The Geography of Nowhere and Home from Nowhere, points to suburban sprawl as a source of much of our nation's discontent. He describes the physical setting of the suburban fringe—a landscape of car-clogged highways, strip malls, tract houses, franchise restaurants, parking lots, junked cities, and a ravaged countryside—as not merely the symptom of a troubled culture, but also the major source of our social problems. He shows that another urban form, the village and the small town, is deeply rooted in our history and has resonance in our national psyche. He argues that the building of suburbia as a replacement for towns and cities was a destructive and tragic act. More important, he argues that this living arrangement, which most Americans have come to view as normal, is bankrupting the nation economically, socially, ecologically, and spiritually, and it cannot continue.
