| Description | Lighting fixtures are made up of many components—lamps, reflectors, lenses, baffles, louvers—that are designed to work together to project the light in a particular way: sometimes in a very tightly defined beam to highlight or accent an object or feature, and sometimes in a diffuse pattern to create an ambient light that fills a space. Arguably, the most important components are the light bulbs or lamps, as we will refer to them. These are at the heart of our lighting fixtures, and are the actual source of the light. When we think about the type of lighting fixtures to specify for a space, the type of lamp, or the source, is one of the first things to consider. Different sources have different qualities and features that make them suitable for different purposes. Some are more easily controlled, or dimmed, than others. Some are available in a variety of color temperatures. Some are suitable for luminaires designed to provide ambient lighting solutions, and some are suitable for accent lighting. Some come to full illumination instantly, and others have a startup cycle that can take as long as a few minutes. Some can be switched off and on frequently, without any delay, and others need to be allowed to cool down after being switched off before they can be started again. And they all have different efficacies, which is another way of saying they each use different amounts of energy 84to create the same amount of light.
