| Description | Roadheaders are mobile and flexible partial-face machines, with selective mining ability, used for excavation of soft to medium strength rock formations. These features make them very attractive for application in underground mining and tunneling operations. The selection of these machines and prediction of their performances are very important issues for scheduling and costing. Importance, advantages and disadvantages, application/utilization areas, production rates and limitations of roadheaders, developments in roadheader technology and machine characteristics will be firstly reviewed in this paper. Then, some roadheader applications in Turkish mining and civil construction industries will be reviewed and the production rates, machine utilization rates and problems encountered will be summarized. This chapter reviews some roadheader applications in Turkish mining and civil construction industries and describes the production rates, machine utilization rates and problems encountered. It reviews importance, advantages and disadvantages, application/utilization areas, production rates and limitations of roadheaders, developments in roadheader technology and machine characteristics. The analysis of the field data indicates that the heavy-duty roadheaders can economically cut most rock formations up to 100 MPa uniaxial compressive strength and rocks up to 160 MPa uniaxial compressive strength. Roadheaders can be classified into two groups based on cutterhead types: transverse and axial. Using roadheaders improved the overall performance of the projects and decreased the cost in many cases compared to the conventional drill and blast excavation methods. The number of roadheader applications in Turkey increases in an accelerated manner. Those are Tuncbilek Coal Mine, Middle Anatolia Coal Mine, Urfa Irrigation Tunnels, Golden Horn Sewer Tunnels, Istanbul Metro Tunnels, Mevhibe Inonu Tunnel and Nuh Cimento Hereke Tunnel.
