| Description | Roadheader type machines are now widely used in mining and tunnelling applications, and encountering the full spectrum of ground conditions. This study examines the key geological and geotechnical factors that influence machine performance and uses a series of influence diagrams to illustrate the complexity of the cutting process. A classification scheme is presented which can be used to predict the performance of a given machine under particular geotechnical conditions. The scheme has been compiled using case history data and research work, and is similar in principle to the Rock Mass Rating scheme. Genuine case studies have been used to calibrate and confirm the ability of the new Scheme to reliably predict roadheader performance. This chapter examines the key geological and geotechnical factors that influence machine performance and uses a series of influence diagrams to illustrate the complexity of the cutting process. It presents a classification scheme which can be used to predict the performance of a given machine under particular geotechnical conditions. The classification scheme has been based upon a framework similar to the Geomechanics Rock Mass Rating scheme. The scheme provides a basis from which machine performance can be more reliably and confidently predicted. The chapter investigates the use of roadheaders with the aim of producing an assessment scheme that could predict accurately the expected performance from a given machine in any particular ground conditions. It describes both mining and civil site-based performance assessments of various machine types, operating in a wide range of geotechnical conditions. The chapter also describes a comprehensive prediction scheme that is beyond the scope of short-term study because of the large number of variables involved.
