| Description | The paper is related to the open pit lignite mining technology and its impact on soil. The anthropic activities in the Oltenia County have produced essential modifications on the geo-morphological structure of the zone and the partial or total destruction of the ecological equilibrium. All these mutations exert negative influence on the eco-systems, and the mining companies' task is to solve the problems of land reclamation and ecological rehabilitation. These acting principles are pre-requested conditions for obtaining positive economical and ecological results. This chapter presents the open pit lignite mining technology and its impact on soil. The lignite deposit is situated in sedimentary rocks of sand, clay and shale type and has the shape of a seam pack with variable thickness, separated by sterile insertions. In Romania, the open pit lignite mining is very important for the electrical power production and is located mainly in the Oltenia County, in the southwestern side of the country. The open pit mining of the lignite begun 45 years ago, period when 17000 ha of agricultural and forest lands were damaged, including human communities. The process of land rehabilitation of the areas damaged by the open pit lignite mining is under performing, the environment protection aspects are considered in a high grade. In the organizational structure of the Lignite national Company a department is dealing with the problems of environmental impact of the mining activity and the land rehabilitation of the affected zones.
