| Description | In many large open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle usually result in corresponding changes in project value that are measured in tens of millions of dollars. Most mining companies select slope angles on the basis of a relatively arbitrary factor of safety. However, this approach does not provide a quantitative assessment of what the failure risk of the slope is and, therefore, does not permit the evaluation of the penalty of failure on one hand, or conservative design on the other. Consequently, the decision to base a slope design on a particular factor of safety is most unlikely to yield the optimum economic slope design. This chapter outlines the methodology that is a risk-based minimum total cost approach to slope design that allows slope angles to be selected on the basis of rational economic and safety criteria. The desired slope angle is that for which the total cost is a minimum. A cost-benefit analysis requires that pit optimisation, reserve estimation and gross revenue be estimated for each of a number of slope configurations. In parallel with the revenue calculation, an estimate must also be made of the total cost of mining each pit shell, including the cost of potential slope failures associated with each slope configuration. Where the ore body in a single pit operation is buried, then consequential costs can become large since production ceases entirely until the failure is remediated. The cost associated with damage to or loss of equipment working in the pit at the time of the failure also needs to be taken into consideration.
