| Description | 'Pollution control'—one spoke in the wheel of environmental quality improvement—is essential to sustain the earth's life supporting system. Treatment of wastewater or control of waste should be considered as the inevitable last step in any industry. Among the various industries responsible for disturbing the sustainability of our earth, explosive industry, which comes under the defence sector, is one that contributes to air, water and soil pollution. Ammunition industries are producers of large quantity of toxic and harmful wastes. Many of these wastes are similar to those produced by large civilian industrial organizations, however, some are peculiar to the army mission. For example, the defence sector has major responsibility for energetic materials—propellants and explosives and for nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) warfare defence. These tasks and activities have strong influence on the environment, generating toxic and harmful wastes at various stages of production. Critical equilibrium of various components of the ecosystem is being disturbed by the generation of hazardous waste generated from explosives manufacturing industries.
