| Description | Aerobic granulation technology (AGT) is an emerging technology of wastewater treatment, which has been mostly explored by the researchers from around 1998–2000 (Dangcong et al. 1999, Tay et al. 2001a). Owing to its potential advantages over the conventional wastewater treatment processes, it has received immense attention after its discovery and has the potential to replace the existing wastewater treatment processes (Tay et al. 2001b). Aerobic granules are formed during wastewater treatment in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) by self-immobilization of different types of microorganisms present in the wastewater (Gonzalez-Gil and Holliger 2014). These granules are denser and heavier than the loose microbial aggregates (e.g., activated sludge) commonly found in the modern day wastewater treatment processes. Therefore, they can settle down very quickly and separation of the sludge or biomass from the liquid phase becomes easy (Ni 2012). The amount of sludge produced by the AGT is significantly lower than that of a conventional activated sludge process (Nor Anuar et al. 2006). Reduction in land and infrastructure related investment requirement is considered as another benefit of this technology. Apart from the aforementioned advantages, the AGT is capable of simultaneously removing carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, various organic pollutants and heavy metals from both municipal and industrial wastewaters (Wang et al. 2010, Ahn and Hong 2015, Jiang et al. 2016).
