The groundwater contamination potential risk evaluation

| Description | The problem of protecting large aquifers against the concomitance action of punctual and diffuse contamination sources seems insoluble but very urgent in presence of the rise of consumption and the fall of quantity and quality of the groundwater resources. Several methods to assess intrinsic vulnerability have been developed and tested in a number of countries of western and Eastern Europe, and North America. In Italy, an important national program of applied research on this topic had been developed since 1984, funded by Civil Defence Ministry and entrusted to National Council of Research. The work of almost 100 researchers distributed all country wide in 20 task-units has covered almost 135,000 $km^{2}$ (in front of 150,000 $km^{2}$ under contamination risk), developing and testing new approaches and methodologies in very different hydrogeological scenarios, from the large alluvial plain to the karstic and/or fissured rocks building mountains. The research experience as a whole has given a complex methodology valid all country wide that take place in the most important state norm for protection of water against pollution. The methodologies and the GIS – based application were published in a specific guideline by the Italian Environment Agency (ANPA, 2001). The paper present shortly the three methods used during the 20 development year of the Italian program, together with intrinsic and integrated map compilation in every part of Italy, their interpretation, application to every stage of territory and use.
