| Description | Since the seminal research of Kahn, Wolfe, Quinn, Snoek, and Rosenthal (1964), organizational researchers have come to view job-related stress as an important area of study. Prior research has documented relationships between a variety of job stressors and the psychological and physical health of workers (e.g., Beehr & Newman, 1978; Ganster & Schaubroeck, 1991; House, 1974; Hurrell & Murphy, 1992; Jex & Beehr, 1991). However, if the goal of occupational stress research is to foster the development of comprehensive models of stress, prior research has suffered from at least two important limitations. First, research on job stress has generally failed to view workers from the broader context of other domains of life such as family. Thus, we know little about the independent influence of work and nonwork (e.g., family) stressors on an individual's well-being (e.g., Burke, 1986). Second, the typical job stress study examines several work-related stressors in conjunction with a single psychosocial moderator variable (e.g., social support, self-focused attention). However, the various psychosocial moderators are likely to be significantly intercorrelated. Therefore, we also lack a 130clear understanding of which variables moderate stressor-distress relationships apart from their relationship to other potential moderator variables. The purpose of this study was to address both of these limitations using data from a randomly drawn community survey. Book Name: Occupational Stress |
