| Description | This chapter discusses the take-up of design ethnography in public policy contexts in the developed world. It shows how a design-ethnographic approach reconfigures how collective issues, and responses to them—in the form of new services or ventures—are constituted. Although the focus in this chapter is aging, there are increasing numbers of examples of this approach being used to craft new ways of responding to challenges such as families in crisis, inequality, chronic disease, and worklessness, far removed from the contexts in which anthropological research has been used to help design new computer systems for workplaces.
