| Description | China is a country with a long history of religious practice. The history of the five major religions being practiced in China now can be traced back for centuries. Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Confucianism. With this historic context in mind, this chapter lays out the current situation regarding the Chinese law governing religious minorities, followed by the case study of the plight of Falun Gong in modern China. Upon the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Communist Party of China, which controlled the government and was the authoritative source of acceptable policy positions on all matters, adopted the Marxist-Leninist view towards religion. The current legal framework demonstrates that, although the Chinese Constitution provides for freedom of religion, it still lacks a set of laws to ensure the specific implementation of this freedom.
