| Description | Religious freedom is frequently written about as though it were a clearly defined generic category of analysis. Quite often the theory of the state responding to religious minorities relies upon the possibility of state neutrality or separation from religion. This chapter presents the idea that not only is the meaning of religious freedom not always shared by those who use it, but the matter is even further complicated by the unevenness with which we might, as social scientists, analyze it in a range of spheres. It argues that the regulation of religious minorities does not reside solely indeed, sometimes not even primarily in the state. The chapter proposes to differentiate the realms in which religious freedom operates and to de-differentiate the idea of the state from society. This move potentially allows us to see the core 'problematic' of this volume from a new vantage point. Book Name: State Responses to Minority Religions |
