Women translators in early modern Europe

Description	More women were active as translators during the Renaissance and Reformation than at any previous time in history. This chapter offers an overview of women translators in Europe in the period c. 1500–1700, providing a summary of existing research. It is divided into two sections: (1) traditional views and (2) new perspectives. The first section summarizes early feminist approaches, i.e. work underpinned by so-called gynocriticism, with its emphasis on the social and historical conditions of women's literary endeavours and on women's difference. Accounts of women translators of the 16th and 17th centuries typically argue that translation offered the fair sex a 'safe' way of participating in intellectual life, provided they restricted themselves to the appropriately feminine subject of religion. The second section of the chapter introduces revisionist work, which is underpinned by efforts to interrogate notions of gender, moving away from assumptions about women's difference and adopting a more contextualizing approach. Critics have started to suggest that women produced translations as part of an effective nexus of patrons, colleagues, and printers. This research offers more nuanced perspectives on women translators in early modern Europe and has implications for how we approach the study of women translators in history more generally.
