Description	Are homophobia and transphobia legacies of colonialism or “native” practices in India ? What are appropriate words for homophobia and transphobia, and are there homophobic and transphobic words in Indian languages? Are words like queer and trans applicable in the Indian context or are they impositions of the global north? What are the appropriate “native” words for queer and trans peoples in Indian languages? If English functions as the imperial language in India, how can the corpus of available translations support a decolonial praxis in the queer Indian context? Building upon the im/possibilities of translating queer(ness) into Indian languages, this chapter avers that understanding and translating queer and trans experiences needs to foreground anti-casteist and decolonial praxis. Critiquing the prevalent tendency to trace/translate queerness by invoking ancient Hindu scriptures, we argue that obfuscating casteist structures of Hinduism to read for queerness and transness in Hinduism (hegemonically read as synonymous to India) reproduces Brahminical casteist violences. Rather, we make the case for a queer and trans translational praxis that holds to account the longue durée of caste and colonial violences which continue to oppress queer and trans peoples in India (including those presently occupied by the Indian state).
