| Description | Why is it still necessary to discuss two (or more) categories, radical feminism and, say, socialist feminism if, as McDowell and Pringle (1992, p. 127) suggest, we have reached a point where such distinctions are both unhelpful and inaccurate? To some it may seem ironic, perverse even, to want to do this in a historical context where we are busily deconstructing categories by which to classify, a little sad and naïve perhaps to want to continue to hold to a particular identity as a certain 'type' of feminist. Others may be dissuaded from looking at this question because of fears that it may inflame past divisions and political disagreements in an unhelpful and unproductive way. I can understand both of these positions. Nevertheless I think there are a number of important reasons for wanting to examine radical feminism as a category to which certain beliefs and practices are often imputed.
