| Description | Twenty-five years ago 'Sisterhood is Powerful' was an enspiriting call to action for feminists. Women called for an end to women's oppression wherever it occurred and horizontal distrust of women was challenged by the sense of community that sisterhood entailed. Without the theoretical construct of 'Sisterhood' - as well as the practical implications of acting upon that theory feminism could not exist. 'Sisterhood' is the recognition of a sense of political commitment to women as a social group and that is perhaps the reason why only radical feminists have continued to champion the idea. 'Sisterhood' does not mean that every woman should like, love or commit herself to every other woman without critical engagement. What it does mean is that we respect, support and encourage women's efforts to achieve freedom globally, we work to further the interests of women as a diverse group and we work with women in our own fields when this is possible. Importantly, we are honestly and constructively critical of other women's theories and practices (rather than criticizing them on the basis of looks or how well they pronounce the words). Commonality of purpose, connection, communication and community are all ingredients of sisterhood. But what we hear these days, inside and out of academia, are differences of purpose (the impossibility of commonality), fragmentation (the impossibility of connection), solipsism or the fear of speaking from any position other than one's own (the impossibility of communication) and individualism (the impossibility of community).
