| Description | Observing children systematically during treatment has greatly expanded our knowledge and understanding of mentalization, and significantly contributed to the development of the treatment model explained in the next chapters. Therapists were invaluable in this process. From behind a one-way screen, therapists observed interventions of other therapists and systematically described interventions they considered beneficial to the child's ability to mentalize. These observations open the door to empirical research into mentalization-based child therapy and – perhaps more importantly – give other therapists an opportunity to learn to work with the method. The observations resulted in a list of categories and intervention techniques for use during treatment, which are fully described in Chapters 7, 8 and 9, and listed in Appendix B. This chapter first shares some lessons that we have learned on how to improve observation skills in treatment. Book Name: Mentalizing in Child Therapy |
