| Description | This chapter looks at how to assess problems with mentalizing in children, focusing in particular on the developmental areas in which these problems are most noticeable. We demarcate the group of children suitable for mentalization-based child therapy and enlist diagnostic instruments. This chapter discusses both unstructured clinical assessment of mentalizing during clinical interviews and structured assessment of mentalizing in children, based on theory and clinical experience, while also providing some suggestions for structured assessment in caregivers. Useful structured information can be obtained from instruments that yield data on attachment classifications, stress regulation and self-organization. This chapter starts with a theoretical and psychiatric description of the target population for mentalization-based child therapy. Book Name: Mentalizing in Child Therapy |
