| Description | Laterite soils which are obtained as weathering products are found commonly in many tropical countries such as India. In Goa, which lies on the west Coast of India, many constructions are undertaken in laterite soils, wherein they have exhibited unexpected behaviour. A laterite soil sample obtained from a typical mining area in Goa was subjected to a triaxial shear tests to investigate the shear strength properties. The parameters 'c' and 'φ' were determined under different drainage conditions and in partially saturated and fully saturated state. The effect of moisture content, diameter of sample and the rate of strain has been investigated. This paper presents the data so obtained and concludes that laterites exhibit different shear strength properties when partially or fully saturated and that the moisture content, diameter of sample and rate of strain influence the peak deviator stress.
