| Description | The history of childhood literature (Aries, 1962; Demause, 1974) documents that while conditions may be horrendous for some children today, they were far worse in the past for greater numbers of children. There is even evidence that infanticide and abandonment were once the norm in the parent-child relationship (Demause, 1974; Bakan, 1971). In general, the further back in history one goes, the lower the level of child care one finds and the more likely one will find children, in large numbers, being physically, sexually, and emotionally abused and neglected. It is important that we keep today's maltreatment problem in historical perspective. It is also important that we avoid the problem of temporalcentrism – judging the past behavior of others according to the norms (Folkways, Mores, & Laws) and values prevalent today rather than according to the norms and values present in the past.
