| Description | Many theories illuminate certain aspects of the phenomenon of child sexual abuse. It was once thought that sexual abuse of children was more common in the lower classes; however, recent studies have shown that the sexual abuse of children crosses all classes of society (American Humane Association, 1984; Giaretto, 1976). The Social Role Theory, including the feminist perspective, faults our gender dominated social system which appears to allow men to prey on women and children (Rush, 1981; Bograd, 1984; Butler, 1985). Family theorists argue that certain dysfunctional family systems are associated with incest, particularly the authoritarian (Finkelhor, 1979; Summit & Krysco, 1977) and boundariless families (Parker & Parker, 1986). The SATP (Sexual Abuse Treatment Project) appreciated the social and relational contexts of these theories; however, the program looked to the causes of child sexual abuse in the intrapsychic of the offender and examined carefully the intrapsychic processes involved in the sexual victimization of children.
