| Description | Pile foundations supporting offshore structures (jackets, wind turbines, etc.) are often subjected to large lateral loading. In design practice, the pile-soil interaction is commonly dealt with using the subgrade reaction method (e.g. soil springs). This chapter presents the state of the art on the development of soil springs and damping for laterally loaded piles under static and cyclic loading for slender piles and for short stubby monopiles. It demonstrates that the soil-pile interaction springs and damping can be fundamentally linked to the soil response measured at the soil element level. By proper consideration of the pertinent soil failure mechanisms (e.g. wedge failure, flow-around failure, base shear, etc.) and the type of loading (static and cyclic), this method can produce site-specific soil springs and damping that achieve good modelling results.
