| Description | Here the author stresses that the inbuilt cultural and traditional differences in Pāsifika need to be recognised and reflected in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Learners come mainly from very low socio-economic home environments and have traditional views, based on reciprocity, respect, inclusion, love and belonging. This is in conflict with competitiveness, and teachers need to adapt their practices to ensure compatibility with these cultural views. Group working, extending outside the immediate group, should be developed to reflect the way Pāsifika people extend beyond their immediate families.
