| Abstract | Traditional media call for a “one way” or “one to many” type of communication. Within such media, individuals are treated as passive elements who are excluded from the communicative process. Instead, they are loaded with input and denied opportunities to express feedback. With the arrival of new media, individuals have become “users” and have the possibility of more actively modifying the message of media. What has additionally changed is that the skills needed for the 21st century are more diverse and complex; collaboration and global exchange are additional skills to be learned. In order to participate in digitally mediated communication, it is not enough to have knowledge about different tools, but it is necessary to be fluent in using tools to produce content. This chapter provides deeper insights into how virtual settings can empower our students to develop 21st-century literacies with a special emphasis on global communication fluency – which combines both language and digital fluency. In particular, the chapter provides data and analysis of a series of virtual exchange projects. The European Dialogue Project (EDP) started in 2013 has given students from Germany, Italy, and Portugal the opportunity to work jointly online and develop new literacies. The ProGlobe project expanded upon this by including two countries in North America, giving way to a new virtual exchange program that focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration. The program has evolved into a language and digital fluency program, providing specialized attention to the needs of both native and non-native speakers, as well as offering practical hands-on training in using digital tools in real-life scenarios. We believe that digital fluency is an integral part of teaching English language skills in today’s modern, interconnected world and have developed guidelines for designing and implementing student collaboration projects for higher education institutions (Brautlacht et al., 2019a,b). |
