| Description | In all industrialised countries there are rising numbers of children and youth who have migration experiences. While the migration experience of people who moved from one country to another country is defined as international, people who move within the same country are classified as national migrants (International Organization for Migration 2010). Migration is an inherently stressful life event because of resettlement and the challenges related with acculturation (Berry 2006). Several studies have investigated the behavioural and emotional difficulties of youth who have migrated internationally. It is well established that international migration is associated with poorer psychological health, including depression, loneliness and low self-esteem (e.g. Berry et al. 2006; Sam et al. 2008). However, very few studies (Aksel et al. 2007; Gün and Bayraktar 2008) haveexamined nationally migrated youth, although their numbers are increasing (International Organization for Migration 2010). To the best of our knowledge, no study has compared the impact of different kinds of national and international migration experiences regarding both the levels of, and the associations between, emotional difficulties and peer victimisation.
