| Description | The increasing risk of environmental degradation has led to a search for alternative energy systems that would have balanced energy production and consumption with reduced environmental impact and increased social and economic benefits. Alternatives mainly include renewables with limitations such as the initial investment cost, lower efficiency and difficulty in scalability for application at commercial scale. Hence, the other option is to optimise the performance of existing energy systems and develop the policy and technology to minimise environmental emissions. The performance of energy systems and the energy firms depend on several qualitative and quantitative factors that need to be addressed and analysed appropriately. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods are being widely used in energy systems selection and analysis on account of their potential to consider multi-dimensionality and the complexity of socio-economic parameters associated with sustainable production. Energy sector problems include many of the decision data that cannot be assessed precisely and hence the range of such parameters is assumed or calculated. The fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) technique developed from the traditional FAHP can take care of such uncertainty and the vagueness in human decisions to a greater extent. FAHP has proved to be an efficient tool in studies based on cost-benefit analysis; benefit, opportunity, cost and risk (BOCR) analysis; strength, weakness, opportunities and threats analysis (SWOT); life cycle analysis (LCA) etc. This chapter discusses the application of different types of FAHPs in some major areas concerning energy systems with examples explaining the choice of criteria and methodology of analysis.
