| Description | 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin (GSM) in a drinking water reservoir were examined with HSPME+GC-MS (Headspace Solid Phase Micro-extraction coupled with Gas-Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) method. The quantification with both internal and external standard spikes as well as their corresponding recovery levels were conducted and compared. In the study, it is recommended to determine MIB and GSM with the quantification method of internal spikes. Spatial and seasonal distribution of the two model compounds were also investigated using a two-year field data. Monitoring results showed that (1) during the study period, the dominant odorant was MIB both inside and outside the reservoir; (2) during the warmer months, GSM concentrations in the rear area of the reservoir and the shallow area near the island were much higher than other areas; (3) during spring and winter in 2011, the MIB concentration in the reservoir was less than the quality of 10 ng/L specified by the Chinese drinking water standard; whereas it reached up to 60-110 ng/L during warmer seasons.
