| Description | Marine hard-substrate habitats include rock, the hard parts of organisms, and anthropogenic materials that vary in composition, physical properties, and spatial extent. Globally, hard substrates cover a relatively minor proportion of the marine benthic environment but make up a significant fraction of the world's coastal areas and support a relatively high biodiversity. Marine hard substrate communities are usually dominated by foundation species (e.g. kelp, mussels, corals, and coralline algae) which, by virtue of their size and/or abundance, form the physical structure of the habitat, determine the diversity of associated taxa, and modulate fluxes of materials and energy at multiple control points in their ecosystems. The major functional roles of organisms on hard substrates can be broadly viewed as related to organic matter fluxes and trophic interactions across food webs and physical ecosystem engineering (i.e. physical habitat formation and modification). Although people obtain multiple important benefits, or 'services', from hard substrate communities and their associated functions (including coastal protection, maintenance of fisheries, nutrient cycling, and tourism and recreation), these communities are experiencing unprecedented anthropogenic change. The future of hard bottom communities depends on sustainable management strategies that account for multiple threats while also reconciling ecological, environmental, and social priorities.
