Description	Although research into the assessment of anxiety in preschoolers still lags behind that for older children, the field is rapidly catching up. There are now a substantive number of questionnaires, surveys, rating scales and clinical interviews for use with parents, caregivers or teachers that play an important part in the assessment of anxiety in preschoolers. This chapter begins by discussing the various purposes and contexts for which the assessment of anxiety in preschoolers is likely to be conducted. In selecting an assessment tool it is important to consider variables such as length, focus, and informant as different instruments have been developed for different purposes. Typically, information is obtained about the frequency, duration, and severity of anxiety symptoms and their impact upon the child's functioning. The chapter provides an overview of the most commonly used questionnaires and clinical interviews and summarizes their structure, content, and evidence base. The relative strengths and weakness of the various tools are discussed, along with issues that need to be taken into account in collating assessment information, such as discrepancies between informants and reporter bias associated with informants' own mental health issues. Finally, the chapter discusses the value of assessing the associated construct of behavioral inhibition and of examining the impact of the child's anxiety upon family and child functioning using tools that have been specifically developed for the preschool population.
