| Description | As a major activity of childhood, play has been given considerable attention by professionals concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of young children. Although play was first used as a medium for assessing and treating emotional and behavioral difficulties, more recent attention has focused on the information play can provide about child development. Play has proven difficult to define, because of the multitude of behaviors that can be considered play and because connotations of “play” are vague and often idiosyncratic. Advances in the sophistication of children's play follow concurrent advances in cognitive development. During the period of functional-conventional play, young children begin to use objects in ways for which they are intended. According to Jean Piaget, play becomes increasingly social throughout the preschool period. The ability to play with other children reflects the increasing social maturity of children. Play has been viewed as an all-encompassing activity which assists in all other areas of development. Book Name: Psychoeducational Assessment of Preschool Children |
