| Description | This chapter focuses on the involvement of older people in social work education. Drawing on a range of experiences, the authors highlight the importance of involving older people in this area. Older people's motivations for engaging with social work education, as well as the factors which can help or hinder such involvement, are also discussed. The chapter offers some key messages for social workers and social work students, including the importance of not making assumptions about people based solely on their membership of a particular “group”. Involving older people directly in social work should be a core part of increasing gerontological input into social work programmes and is a step towards ensuring that social workers do not “judge a book by its cover”.
