| Description | Franco-German reconciliation has become one of the truisms of inter-national politics. Commenting in 1976 on the possible consequences of the coming Bundestag elections for West German foreign policy, Alfred Frisch noted: Close Franco-German cooperation is no longer a dream but a daily reality. This chapter examines the evolution of the role of France and of European integration in West German foreign policy. The multifarious personal contacts between individual French and German people were the starting point of the new era of West German foreign policy toward France, distinguishing it from the generations of mutual incomprehension that contributed to the coming of the First and Second World War. The Schuman Plan, however, emphasized the vast gulf in Germany separating the foreign policy goals of the Christian Democratic party and the opposition Socialist party headed by Kurt Schumacher. Acceptance of the Treaties of Rome implied a major new orientation for West German foreign policy. Book Name: West German Foreign Policy: 1949-1979 |
