Description	65This chapter defines Intelligent User Interfaces, and describes a range of related issues, including multimedia input analysis, multimedia presentation generation, and the adoption of user, discourse and task models to personalize and enhance interaction. We contrast conventional commercial user interface architectures with those that have evolved from research on Intelligent User Interfaces over the past twenty years. We emphasize how Intelligent User Interfaces that reason about and exploit knowledge of the user, the task, and the communication process can mitigate application and domain complexity through such means as tailored presentation design and cooperative responses. Through reference to implemented systems, we exemplify ways in which intelligent interfaces tailor interaction for different user groups (e.g., novices versus experts; youth versus elderly) with differing capabilities and interests, from different access points (e.g., terminals, public information kiosks, portable digital assistants), and for a range of different applications and services (e.g., learning, traveling, shopping). Based on the examples, we conclude with a discussion of how Intelligent User Interface technologies can provide support in achieving interaction for all. Book Name: User Interfaces for All
